Title: Unusual Village
I had just finished the last page of the story that resonated with me more than any other ever had. I reflected on how it all played out. So intricate, so creative. Of course, it was fiction, but I could see myself living that life.
After my time of reflection, I went for a walk. I needed the sun and fresh air. I stepped outside and the warm air of late July washed over my body like walking into a heated pool. The warmth intensified the smell of freshly mown grass.
Along my route, I rounded a corner to see a lady talking to a man, standing near a stretch of brick wall between an ice cream shop and a boutique store. Something was peculiar about them, but I couldn't place what it might be. Then I heard a loud sound from behind me, causing me to turn to look for its source. A man was closing down his hot dog stand. I turned back around to continue my route. The man and woman were no longer there. I had only turned for a second.
I stared closely at the spot where they stood and noticed the heel of a foot disappear into the wall. Stunned, I walked to the wall to feel it, my hand went right through. I walked all the way in to find an unusual village I never knew existed. The buildings were tall with angular rooftops. Lights shone everywhere with the day waning into dusk. Across the street was a man with his wife and children, all in robes.
Something on the forehead of the man caught my eye. It was a mark … in the shape of lightning … to my shock, I suddenly understood that my favorite story wasn't so fictional after all.
