Title: Two Milestones Down
Two milestones down. Today, the second milestone had been 45 years in the making. In my teens, my friend, Gisli, originally from Iceland, told me about the Landmannalaugar Mountains. I was dying to see this range, constructed by volcanic artisanship of hills, valleys, and dynamic color variations.
I’d read about the Blahnukur-Brennisteinsalda Loop. A six-mile hike covering two summits over 1000 feet in elevation change. To overlook Iceland from those heights was a view I longed to behold.
I began my journey with my backpack of supplies and food, my camelpack filled with water, and my determination. It wasn't easy. Halfway up the first summit, I was already feeling fatigue in my legs. My steps were growing shorter and shorter. But giving up was never an option. I didn't care if it took six hours or six weeks, this would not foil me.
I rested for thirty; ate and drank and was on my way again. The top of the first summit was everything I knew it could be; actually… more. It boosted my confidence and I knew that the taller of the two mountains was within my reach. Some of that transition was easier, as it included going down in elevation from the first tip. But I also knew that every step down meant another step upward toward my next goal. Some people offered to help me. Though grateful, I thanked them and let them know that this was something I needed to accomplish myself.
Hours later, I’d made it. I’d found the most gorgeous view on Earth. Now, at 58, I’d persevered and conquered that dream. As taxing as it was… I knew it couldn't beat me. Because my first milestone earlier this year; when I found out that cancer failed to defeat me… I knew nothing could.
