Title: Tears Began To Fall

John Ferrier had a mission in mind for a long time now. Nothing could deter him. He had toiled every day, all summer long.

He'd been going for eight hours, straight through the night. His legs, feet, fingers, and brain needed a break. So, he sat on his old aluminum work stool. Grabbed one of his red cotton shop cloths and wiped off as much grease, paint, and sticky silicone as he could before grabbing his water for a quench.

John's project was so close to completion, he could not keep it out of his thoughts. It was six o'clock in the morning and he was determined to finish before lunch.

Ten minutes would have to be enough rest. He only had to reattach a fender that he had painted and then work the car over with a finishing polish. The restoration of the vintage vehicle would be complete.

John was able to accomplish these tasks with enough time to shower and freshen up. He toweled the dripping shower water off of his skin, pink from the heat. Dressed and packed a picnic basket, which he then affixed to the back of his candy apple red construct.

He set off toward the park where he would reveal the fruits of his labor. He arrived and parked near the agreed upon tree. There she sat on a baby blue blanket in her white summer dress with no clue who was in the car that just parked nearby. That is … until he stepped out.

“Hey, baby girl!”

Her eyes, the size of the frisbee another family was throwing in the distance, were bright and wide. “Daddy?”

“Happy sweet sixteen!” he said as he detached the basket and then tossed her the key.

Tears began to fall … for both of them.
